About Utila

“Whats Utila? Never heard of it..” Common words, even among experienced divers and seasoned globetrotters. Utila is (thankfully) still the hidden gem of the Caribbean. Way more under the radar than its big sister neighboring island of Roatan, Utila still holds true to its “off the beaten path” identity, and that means less development, less crowds, clean clear water, fantastic scuba diving, and an unspoiled underwater ecosystem. Sitting right in the heart of the Mesoamerican Reef, Utila has an incredibly abundant coral reef packed to the brim with awesome animals large and small. Previously world famous as a backpacker paradise, Utila has stepped up its game and is now home to some fantastic first class accommodation, a flourishing restaurant scene, and an influx of expats looking to escape the rat race and live the island life the way it once was!!

Getting to Utila

Two great entry points make getting here easier than ever. Option 1) Book a flight to Roatan (RTB) and catch the Utila Dream ferry departing for Utila at 2pm every day. This is usually easiest choice. Option 2) Book a flight to San Pedro Sula (SAP) on mainland Honduras and catch a puddle jumper flight (currently available ONLY on Saturdays at the moment but check their website for up to date information) via CM Airlines, or take a private taxi to La Ceiba and catch the Utila Dream Ferry departing for Utila every day at 9am & 4:30pm. The flight is quick and easy, and traveling over land will take significantly longer. The folks over at utilaguide.com have put together a comprehensive site with tons of great information about the island, so give it a visit to learn about travel options, accommodation, places to eat, and more.

Where to Stay

Without large chain hotels, Utila has managed to keep its old school island charm intact, and it’s a breeze finding accommodation ideal for your group. The main street is scattered with cute and basic hotels and guesthouses. A great option is to hop over to www.utilavacationrentals.com and check out some of the wonderful and unique rental homes the island has to offer – From one bedroom jungle cabanas to spacious four bedroom waterfront homes. Property managers Tony and Jo have been living here in paradise for 20+ years and have set a high bar for vacation rentals here on the island. They can even organize amenities in advance such as golf cart rentals and grocery shopping!
